December 2022 Anniversary Chair Message and Final Leaderboard Status Report

As I write this, I think of all the fun the members of this club have had over the decades. Shows, rallies, parties, parties, parties. . .   All planned, prepared and participated in by members who just enjoy their cars and the people who have cars like theirs. 

This year was an intentionally busy one. The Board members worked hard to make sure there was something to do each month. Events were held in a variety of locations so more people felt like going to them and to have enough variety so there would be something for everyone. People who participated this year were founding members, long-time members, and some of our very newest members. The club membership increased by dozens this year!  

As is true with all member-driven organizations, you get out of it what you put into it. Participating in the club’s variety of events creates memorable experiences. I was often impressed by the re-telling of some long past incident shared by two or more members – some hilarious kerfuffle that resulted in robust laughter. New lifetime friends are made in The Shared Experience. The cars don’t know who we are, so why have a car like this if not to use it to create tomorrow’s anecdotes today?! Along the way, casual members realize that this is the “tribe” they want to run with.

This year, the Leaderboard was established to make it possible for everyone to participate at some level. Points were given for attending events, wearing period fashions, having the club grille badge in place, wearing the club nametag, recruiting a new member, participating in point earning games and activities, and more. The most impressive point earners were the ones who went over and above. Those individuals who demonstrated the essence of the club; lending a hand with a mechanical issue, hosting an event, writing a piece for the newsletter, serving on the Board, helping at an event, sharing knowledge, etc. There were limitless ways to earn points, starting with the very simple thing of renewing your membership by the deadline. Here’s the run-down:

20 Social Occasions, 9 Drives, 1 Tech Session, 7 Shows.

Certainly, there was plenty of opportunity to participate with your Brit Car Friends.

Since the Leaderboard Activity was such a hit this year, many members expressed they would like to do it again in 2023! The Board gave approval for the year ahead and Bob Tatterson generously offered to be the Leaderboard Master for 2023.

Everyone had so much fun in March at our First MG Trivia Night, we’re doing another one!

November 9th is the last enhanced Beer & Banter of the year, and one of your last chances to earn points on the leaderboard. It’s enhanced because you have a chance to make your MG knowledge pay off by participating in Trivia Night Two. For your convenience, the competition will be held at two locations.

In the spirit of Beer & Banter, participants will be ordering food and drinks off the menu. Each location will have different questions than they had in March. One point will be awarded for each right answer, plus additional points for nametags, participation, coins, fashion, etc.

If you can show a coin minted the same year as your car’s make, you earn points for that. If you wear clothes from the decade your car was built, there are points for that, too. And study up!

October 2022 50th Anniversary Chair Message and Leaderboard Status Report

The BEST thing about belonging to a club like ours is knowing there are some amazing resources close at hand.  This past month a few of our members proved the value of this by lending long time member Carol Schuh a hand with her car. Since her husband passed away, she has not had it out much, but there was a reason for that. It needed some attention. When Carol arrived at the Lost Souls Rally to give the drive teams a nice send off with her generous supply of donuts, we became aware that Carol needed the club to come to her aid. Through the decades, Carol and her husband gave countless service hours to the success of the thriving club and of course the right thing to do was to reciprocate.  

Dave Hanson, Bernie Evans, Dale Schmidt and Dave Jefferson all received big bonus points for going over and above this month by helping Carol Schuh with her car and also Kit Hanson with her car while her husband is ill.  This is the priceless part of what makes our club great. It’s the really great people who do the right thing. 

At this writing, the 50^th Anniversary Party is just one day behind me and another 3 months to go. So, stay tuned for information of upcoming events in September, October, November and December. Details will be posted on our website calendar. Please call if you’re looking for a way to lend a hand (more points for you) or if you just need more information.  Meanwhile, the success of our big event on 9/10/22 would not have been the success it was without the dedication and help from so many who stepped up and made it all happen.

Meet at 9:30 am on 9/10/22 at the park behind the Newburg Fire Department, 508 N Main St., Newburg, WI. A team must have a Driver & a Navigator. Pick up your drive instruction kit. At 10:00 a team will be released every minute. Over 100 points will be available to be earned on the drive alone.

Anniversary Party

The Rally ends at Lime Kiln Park in Grafton at 2020 S Green Bay Rd., Grafton, WI at approximately 12:30 /1:00 pm and the Anniversary Party begins! Enjoy a delicious traditional Fish & Chips and a pint or two along with numerous other delicacies and Anniversary Cake and Frozen Custard. Enjoy music, games, snacks, fun and fellowship as this party is happening rain or shine in the beautiful Zaun Pavillion. But, wait! There’s more. . . .! We need to order food so please RSVP so we can feed everyone. 

Car Show

Upon arrival at Lime Kiln Park, prepare you car for the Club Car Show. Yes, it needs to be “show ready”! There will be points, prizes and mutual appreciation/admiration for the members finely tuned and detailed vintage rides.

Things you’ll find helpful

Getting to the Drive Starting location. THE INTERSECTION OF HWY 33 AND COUNTY HWY I IS COMPLETELY OUT. BIG DETOUR. Avoid Hwy 33 east of Newburg from Hwy Y to I-43 in Saukville. You will not get through. Check County and State Road construction/closure websites for complete information prior to 9/9/22 to make sure you can get to the start on time. 

Ability to take photos (iPhone or similar works fine), Wear Fashions that would have been worn about the time your car was built. Bring a coin from the year your car was built. Cleaning products you prefer for cleaning up your car for the show.

The Club has rented the Zaun Pavilion in Lime Kiln Park for the day so we will be able to have the party rain or shine. It’s spacious and lovely and easily accommodates our whole club with nice tables, chairs and a full kitchen.

Sign up to be one of 7 Volunteers needed to lend a hand with some fairly easy, short time tasks and earn some additional points in exchange. Nothing will take more than a half hour. Just let us know if you can lend a hand for a short while that day.

August 1, 2022 50th Anniversary Chair Message and Leaderboard Status Report

The past few months have presented plenty of opportunities for our club members. Car shows, drives, socials at frozen custard stands, parties and even a regional GOF. The coming months will also provide plenty of new opportunities to get your car out and drive it with dignity and pride. Have you been able to participate this year? If not but would have liked to, please let us know how we can help. Do you need a navigator or co-pilot to attend events with you? Do you want to participate but, your car is not functioning to the level you feel it should in order to make a short trip in it? We’d love to hear about it and offer helpful suggestions and assistance. Lets try to match a driver and car with a passenger so more people can have fun. If there’s something you’d like to do but we have not formed an event for it, we love hearing ideas so let us know. We are coming into some nice weather so if it’s a great day and you just wish there was a MG3 event you could participate in that day, Why not?!  Impromptu events are possible. Just let us know and we will put out a “Braking News” email blast for our members with your basic details.

Our 50th Anniversary Celebration is coming up on September 10^th. This will involve a drive and a party. What we do that day will be recorded by photographs and put in the clubs archives. So, appearance matters. What ever you and your car look like on that day is how it will look for the rest of the history of the club in photos. Is your car photo ready? Vacuum, dust, remove bug guts and debris from wheels. Is the quality of the paint job “show ready”? How’s it running? Your MG should be able to make the Anniversary drive without the engine light flashing (or equivalent), and not emitting chemical, gasoline or moldy smells. How’s your upholstery looking? If you have to stitch it up, now’s the time.  Cars will be inspected. Points will be given for smooth running and lights working, etc. 

Consider the fashion of the day, in the year your car was built. What were they wearing in the 50’s? or 60”s, 70’s or 80’s? What ever year your car was built, you will earn points for dressing in a way that would have been the fashion during that year.

The starting point and time for the Anniversary Drive on September 10^th will be posted on the club calendar. Watch for those details and remember that while we will strenuously avoid expressways, there are road closures and construction detours. So, check your route to the starting place ahead of time to make sure you can get to the start without a detour. Cars should expect to be driven with a driver and navigator for best results. Clues, questions and also some tasks will need to be performed. 

Do you happen to have a few British music recordings? Bring them along so we can all enjoy some Brit tunes while we’re partying.

June 1, 2022 50th Anniversary Chair Message and Leaderboard Status Report

This month marks the 50^th Anniversary of the first MG3 Club Meeting. All the members had an MG of some kind. They came together, became friends and put together a club that was focused on having fun with their MGs, learning more about them and helping each other find the answers needed to maintain or restore one of these cars. Early member stories are rich with the experiences of taking on these vintage car projects. Often the answer needed is one that is shared by someone like you who’s “been there”.  We take time in June to honor these founders on June 4^th at Bob and Kathy Tatterson’s house in Mequon. Past Presidents who are still members of the club will earn 4 points per each year they served as club president. Bring an early member with you and get points, bring a club past-president with you and get points, bring a friend and get points, play croquette, boche ball or lawn bowling and get more points. Help with the event by bringing something, more points for that, too.  Please RSVP to Kathy per instructions on the Calendar page.

They’re Back!! MG3 Tech Sessions:  new date of August 6^th at Tony Loziniecki’s residence. Drive in and bring your vintage car related questions. Earn points by attending, wearing your nametag and carrying a coin that was minted in the same year as your car. Don’t have one? You can buy one from the score keeper that day. Depending on the year, they go for between $5 – $20 and points are earned in accordance with the decade. 

On June 19^th, Sussex Park will again be the location of the annual British Car Field Day. This annual British car show is always full of surprises. Our club always has a prominent showing at this event. Thanks for participating and making our club look good. Submitting a story or photos of the event to Scott and Tamara Crouch, our Electronics Communications Co-Chairs, will also earn you points. As always, earn points for showing up, wearing your nametag, and having the club’s grill badge on your car. 

Following shortly after that, you can look forward to seeing your other loyal club members and new friends at Sundaes on Wednesday’s at Gilles Frozen Custard on Bluemound Road, Wauwatosa on June 22nd. Come dressed in a vintage fashion costume consistent with your cars age and there are big points to earn for that. This is your time to be stylin’.

POP UP events! If you find it’s a nice day to drive your “fairweather car” but no Club event is on the schedule, feel free to have an impromptu “POP UP” event and post it on Facebook for others to attend. It’s a good way to get to know more members on the spur of the moment.  Could be a small group drive in your locale or a high school parking lot tailgater mini-car show during a baseball game. Whatever it is, post it on Facebook with place and time and what the nature of the event is. Then take photos of your POP UP event and send them to Scott and Tamara. Planning a POP UP event earns points so let us know about it in an email. 

Let’s see more proudly driven MG’s on the road in the next couple months. And remember, “Friends don’t let friends drive the interstate.”

May 1, 2022 50th Anniversary Chair Message and Leaderboard Status Report

This month, we passed the torch. Our immediate Past President, Ron Videkovich handed the reins over to our new President, Ron Willman. Dave Hanson has stepped into the role of Club Treasurer and Dave Jefferson will continue his dual role as Club Vice-President and Membership Chair.  At our Gala on April 23rd, we thanked Ron V for diligently serving his term as President 2019 – 2021.

Ken and Connie Rizzo retired from their dual role as Electronic Communications Chair and Roster Chair. Its quite an undertaking to keep the roster up-to-date and no small task to have made it possible to prepare the roster for print every other year. Without Ken and Connie’s steadfast commitment to keep that record of our membership current, this would not happen as well as it does. Ken and Connie were shown the club’s appreciation and thanks at the Gala and Ken shared how far the club has come in terms of sending out newsletters in print form to single emails and now to group electronic communications, social media and electronic payments.  We are grateful for Ken and Connie and happy that they are continuing to keep us close in the years ahead by continuing to participate in our club’s many activities.

The 50th Anniversary Leaderboard is updated monthly. As you know, members earn points by participating in the club. Some ways to earn points are obvious and some are automatic. Wear your nametag – get a point. Pay your dues on time – get a point, donate an auction item – earn more than one point, recruit a member – get 5 points, etc. Some ways you can earn points will be a surprise.

At our Gala, the surprise point earning activity was Coins. If you had a coin on you that had the date stamped on it the same as your vintage car, you got points for that.   

-1940 – 1949 = 20 points
-1950 – 1959 = 15 points
– 1960 – 1969 = 10 points
– 1970 – 1980 = 5 points

Paper money with the year numbers printed on it in sequence also count (1972 car = “72” in numeric sequence on the bill). If the two letters “MG” appeared in sequence on the bill, that gets you an additional 3 points. Search your coin jar. We will be doing this again. Might want to be sure you have a coin with your cars date on it with you at all times. You never know when you might need to show it.

Can’t find a coin with your car’s year on it?  Not to worry! You can buy one for the same point value that is earned. All proceeds from “Car Year Coins” helps fund the 50th Anniversary drive and party on September 10th. Just ask for a “Mulligan”!

SAVE THE DATE ! ! !  Our Founders Day Tea will be held on June 4th, exactly 50 years after the first meeting of the MG3 Club. Club Board Member Bob (and Kathy) Tatterson will host this party. Bring early members that you know and come and enjoy the delights of a traditional English Tea complete with English china. OR if you fancy the Pub culture, pints and bar snacks. As is true with all 2022 MG3 happenings, points can be earned.  You can boost your score 10 points by bringing an early member to the event. Leaderboard scores update

Month by month, members are adding points in our year long activity that all members can participate in. Remember, a point can always be earned by remembering to wear your club nametag to events. Organizing and/or hosting an event earns points, serving on committees or taking an officer role in the club leadership earns points. Planning a drive or helping with one, sharing your great story in The Exhaust or sharing technical information earns points. Of course, the events themselves are the best way to rack up points (such as our recent Gala Dinner and Annual Meeting). There will be surprise opportunities to earn points when you’re not even thinking about it. For example, do you happen to have a coin minted in the same year as your vintage car? You never know when someone will ask you to show it.  Watch the club calendar as more details are developed along the way in the planning. 

In May, we start our club drives. Participating earns points, but you also get points for remembering to wear your nametag, and if your car has the club badge on it. Leaderboard Scores as of May 1st, 2022:

April 1, 2022 MG3 50^th Anniversary Leaderboard Status Report

Earlier this year, we introduced the idea of a year long activity that all members could find a way to participate in. That is where the 2022 Leaderboard comes in. Members earn points for participating and the leaderboard is updated each month with the results being posted in The Exhaust newsletter. Many members have earned one point so far by paying their club annual dues by the February 28^th deadline. A point can also be earned by remembering to wear your club nametag to events. Organizing and/or hosting an event earns points, serving on committees or taking an officer role in the club leadership earns points, and planning a drive or helping with one, also earns points. Perhaps you have a great story to tell or want to share technical information. You can earn points for submitting Newsletter content. Of course, the events themselves (such as our recent Trivia Challenge Night) are the best way to rack up points. There will be surprise opportunities to earn points when you’re not even thinking about it. For example: do you happen to have a coin minted in the same year as your vintage car? You never know when someone will ask you to show it.

In April, we hold our Annual Gala. This is when we elect officers and other important club information is shared. Of course, you’ll earn points for attending that as well (remember to wear your club nametag!)

March 1, 2022: 50^th Anniversary Planning Chair Message

In the past month, our members have had the opportunity to share their their thoughts about the club by phone and email. Why contact each member? One member relayed a sentiment that captures the essence of club membership: “Without the cars, the club would be without purpose. But the cars don’t know the people exist. The club is ALL about the people”. 

Looking back at the invitation (invitation here and newsletter here) to the first club meeting on June 4^th, 1972 at Joe Kramer’s house (Member #3), you can feel the excitement as the soon-to-be Charter members plan their first gathering. Of cars? Yes! But mostly of the lifetime friendships that would be formed that day. 

I want to thank early members Mark & Gloria Rodenkirch for providing that piece of history.

As a new member myself, I feel the excitement of belonging that is conveyed in that first invitation –  anticipating the fun you can have getting to know the others who share your love of the car, and warmly recollecting the time spent in the company of new friends. 

And hey – winter is (almost) behind us! It will soon be time to pull the blankets off our little fair-weather cars, shine them up, and rev them up.

In preparation for our monthly early member/new member newsletter features, early members have eagerly responded and shared some great stories and anecdotes that capture the club experience.  While some have passed, moved away, or become inactive, those remaining early members fondly share their hopes that the friendly club culture will continue for decades to come. 

The top priority of the 50th Anniversary Committee Chair is to create fellowship opportunities throughout the year. Opportunities that are easy to participate in, occur regularly, and are geared toward the entire membership. 

On March 9^th, the MG III Club’s first Trivia Challenge will occur in two locations simultaneously (calendar here), making it easier for members to reach. A huge thanks goes out to your event hosts Bob & Kathy Tatterson, and Cliff Muehlenberg for making these events possible!

The 25 multiple-choice questions will be focused heavily on MG topics. You can easily prepare for the challenge by reading articles and watching online videos.  Once you’re there, you won’t be able to refer to your electronic communication device to help you with the answers.

1) Trivia Challenge SW will be held at Matty’s located at 14460 W College Ave, New Berlin, 53151 

Host: Cliff Muehlenberg. Gather and Gab at 6 pm over a snack and a sip from the menu. Be ready to start to compete at 6:30 pm.

2) Trivia Challenge NE will be held at Cedars III Bowling Center W53 N404 Park Circle, Cedarburg, 53012

Hosts: Bob & Kathy Tatterson Join the gang at 5:30 and order your own dinner and drinks off the menu while getting to know your competitors. Trivia starts at 6:30 running until 7:30pm. 

Both locations have great, affordable menus that won’t disappoint. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Feb 1, 2022: 50^th Anniversary Planning Chair Message

There’s never been a better time to own and enjoy a vintage car! After 23 months of some level of isolation and avoidance, we that like to be out and about have adapted pretty well to what we need to do to participate in our lovely car events, see our good friends, and enjoy all that a vintage car provides. Aside from the occasional and somewhat predicable need our cars have to want things and money from us, not that much has actually changed. We can get in our cars and drive them, and with the windows down, we lower health risks. Stationed more than a cars width apart, we can attend as many cars shows as we want. 

So, we are revving up for an exciting year of activities and events that everyone should be able to participate in to celebrate the 50^th Anniversary of our Club. Here’s a few of the things you have to look forward to. More details to come as the date of each event approaches, so keep an eye on our website, newsletter, and social media postings. 

Starting in February, our President will host the club at his house for a chili cookoff & BBQ with games and prizes. 2/5/22 See previous Exhaust for info.

Two MG based Trivia Challenge events will occur just before and just after the driving weather. 

We will, of course, expect a large turn-out for our Annual Gala and two additional parties. One will be on June 4^th , which is our Founders Day – the first meeting of the club’s 24 Charter members. Click here to view the list of charter members. Please inform Secretary Fisher if you know the whereabouts of any of them so we can send a special invitation to them for that party. We will also have a Lost Souls Rally in the same neck of the woods where the clubs first meeting was held.

Our big anniversary event will be held on September 10^th. More on that later, but save the date because you’re sure not going to want to miss it.

All through the year, activities will be planned and posted for participants to earn points. The drives and shows will all be accompanied by point earning opportunities. Additionally, each month two members will tell their stories in the newsletter – one new member and one early member. Great stories! Some of our members have shared early club documents and news that reveal happenings along the way through the growth of the club. If you have some to share, please do.

Your Executive Board is working hard to make your participation in the club the most fun you’ve ever had. We’ve just approved a full page of year-long action and ask that you please keep an eye on the website for postings on upcoming meetings, games, drives, shows, competitions, and other activity this year. So, shine up your little beauty and mark your calendar for the fun to come. We’re looking forward to seeing you.
